Hit-Highlighting Snippets

The SearchStax Site Search solution's users often use the Hit-Highlighting feature to emphasize keywords-in-context in the Results Fields. The system attempts to show the user where the search keyword(s) appeared in the matching document.

How Hit-Highlighting Affects Display

This feature has a side effect that sometimes surprises the website admin. The Description field normally shows the first few lines of the document’s text. When Hit Highlighting is active, however, the display changes. Instead of a block of text, the Result Item shows three-sentence snippets from the body of the document. The middle sentence contains the highlighted match, emphasized by Italics in the Hosted Search Experience.

A comparison showing search result text with and without hit-highlighting, demonstrating how keywords appear highlighted in yellow in the bottom example.

The two examples illustrate how the text of the result-item Description field is formatted to serve different purposes when Hit Highlighting is enabled or disabled.
